BACKGROUND: Through multiple lines of evidence, this evolutionarily conserved neurosignalling system has shown neuroprotective capabilities and is, therefore, a potential target for neurodegenerative disorders. This review details the mechanisms of neurodegeneration and highlights the beneficial effects of cannabinoid treatment.
